Friends of the Arts promotes communication, education, economic development, appreciation and collaboration in Butte County. Events are hosted throughout the year where community members have the chance to enjoy silent films, make papier-mache giant horses, watch poetry readings and attend dance performances. Large community events include Artoberfest, Chico Palio, the Salmon Festival and the Silent Film Festival.

Chico’s Artoberfest: A Festival of Arts & Culture

From the swish of dancers’ dresses to the strumming of guitars, Artoberfest celebrates the National Arts and Humanities month all 31 days of October. This festival, an eclectic mixture of Chico’s community, has exploded since 2005, its events growing in number from 85 to 150. Additionally, in 2008, Artoberfest received the Judge’s Choice for the Best Cooperative Marketing Campaign Award from the California Travel and Tourism Commission.

Featured at the festival are:

  1. Concerts

  3. Literature
  4. Poetry
  5. Dance
  6. Film and video
  7. Visual arts
  8. Music
  9. Theater
  10. Architecture
  11. Special events

Included in the special events of the festival are:

  1. Open Studios Tour
  2. Sierra Oro Farm Trail
  3. U.S. National Yo-Yo Contest
  4. Oktoberfest and Glass Fest, sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

Each year, the festival has hosted presenters, who have included:

  1. Chico Performances
  2. 1078 Gallery
  3. Children’s Choir of Chico
  4. The Janet Turner Print Museum
  5. Chico Cabaret
  6. Chico State’s College of Humanities & Fine Arts
  7. Local museums and attractions
  8. "The Writing Loft" in Paradise

 

Currently, Friends of the Arts measures Artoberfest’s success though the number of activities and organizations involved in the festival and the success of the events produced.
